Where is Lourdes, & what's it like?
As you can see from the map above, Lourdes is situated in the
Pyrenees, the mountains that form the border separating France and
Spain.
The area where the majority of our pilgrimage takes place is the
Domaine, which is the area around the grotto, encompassing the
hospitals, churches, procession area and a large grassy space called
the Prairie.
Hover the mouse over the map to find out what everything is
On the map above at the bottom of the picture, in the middle, you
can see the Accueil Notre Dame, coloured yellow in this diagram. It
is here that the people we look after stay, and here is where we all
spend our time when in Lourdes. Click on the building to take the
Guided Tour.
Above the river are the three basilicas, and the large area called
the Esplanade. The two processions daily take place in this area.
The Prairie is the area on the right, while the pink building is St
Bernadette's Church.
A full description of the Domaine area and the history of the
apparitions is available here.
There's loads more to the town, as I haven't even touched on the
areas outside the domain. I'm not going to go through all of it, but
the one place you need to know about is Felix's, officially called
the Cafe au Roi Albert. This is the social seat of the pilgrimage
and you can usually find us here after work. You'll probably hear us
as well, as we tend to sing a lot while we're there!
